I
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that is already being used for so much, from being able to quickly gather information to carrying out various complex tasks to even accurately predicting future trends. In some cases, we may not even realize when AI is being used, for example when we speak with a chatbot online, it's very easy to think we are speaking to a real person. One of the biggest uses of AI is solving problems and today, one of the biggest problems we face is Climate change, a problem that continues to worsen with each day, and what we are currently doing is not working. The issue is we don’t know enough. However, this is not the case for AI which can help us to increase our knowledge in two main areas: 1. Making better predictions about the climate of the future and 2. Helping us to mitigate our emissions.
Currently, meteorological agencies and research institutes use historical data and satellites to predict the climate. This method relies on statistical analysis to make predictions. With AI, however, we can process far more data from various sources which would lead to more accurate predictions. There are also machine learning models which can identify complex patterns that we may not be able to spot using traditional methods. AI offers us a way to continuously monitor our climate and detect even the slightest changes which can give early warnings of possible hazards allowing us to prepare adequately. Using AI, we can greatly improve the precision and reliability of our projections further enhancing our ability to mitigate the effects of climate change.
Secondly, AI can greatly improve our strategies for reducing our greenhouse gas emissions. At the moment, governments and organizations suggest various methods to help reduce our emissions such as switching to renewable energy and improving our efficiency. In some cases, governments have imposed taxes on carbon emissions. The issue with this is monitoring these changes with conventional methods is time-consuming and resource-intensive. If we used AI, we could easily monitor energy consumption and increase our efficiency, identify exactly what parts of a process lead to the most emissions, and find specific solutions to these issues would be much easier.
It's clear AI has huge potential to help us in the fight against climate change. In using AI, we can ensure we put in place the right strategies and decrease the time for us to reach our goals. We don’t have long to fight climate change so it's clear we’ll need AI if we want to be successful.
